Select The Wood For Your Custom Knife's Handle

The Excellence of Stabilized Wood at JR Blacksmithing

At JR Blacksmithing, I pride myself on using only the finest stabilized wood for each custom knife handle, ensuring both durability and beauty.

Understanding Stabilized Wood

- What It Is: Stabilized wood has undergone a process that fills its natural porosity and moisture, rendering it impervious to changes in temperature and humidity.

- Why It's Superior: Unlike traditional wood, stabilized wood doesn't contain air pockets or moisture, making it highly resistant to environmental fluctuations. This quality is particularly valuable in diverse climates like Canada's, with its hot summers, wet autumns, and cold winters.

The Stabilization Process and Its Benefits

- Method: The process utilizes wood's porous nature by first extracting all air, then saturating it completely with a special resin. This resin is then cured and hardened through heat treatment.

Advantages

  1. Increased Hardness: The wood, infused with hard resin, becomes significantly more durable.
  2. Climate Resistance: Fully impregnated with resin, the wood is immune to water absorption and won't expand or contract in different weather conditions.
  3. Aesthetic Appeal: Stabilized wood not only retains but enhances the natural luster of even softer woods. It can be dyed in various colors without the risk of the dye bleeding out, offering unique and vibrant handle options.

Source of my Materials

I source all my handle materials from a professional and talented fellow craftsman, John Bryant (@the_muskokaturner). His expertise in both dyeing and stabilizing wood ensures that each knife handle is not only functional but also a piece of art.
